Road Cost Estimates

The construction of roads is not an easy matter for the road authority involved in the project. Not only does a project like this, involve a large number of machinery, it also requires a lot of thought that goes into the location and planning of the road.

Road construction, across the world, is an industry where, pretty much, the same techniques and equipment are used the world over. The costs of construction also depend largely on the terrain and soil conditions, road standards, machine and labour costs, amongst other things, as well as the skill level of the operators and technicians involved in the entire construction process. As a result, creating a standard for road cost estimates is relatively simple and once the main estimating factors have been identified, the road cost can be predicted.

To enable road cost estimations, it is advisable to divide all the factors involved, into smaller groups based on their functionality (for e.g. surveying, formation of the road, crushing gravel, etc.). Once each elements cost has been estimated, unit costs are developed, to determine the project costs for all future projects. These are steps that need to be taken by the Road Building Authority and help in streamlining the planning process for future.

Technology has stepped in and has provided these civil authorities with various road cost estimating software wherein, all they have to do is feed in the data into the system, or better still, just connect it to the database, and calculate the road estimates based on numerous formulae or techniques stored into the system already. These road cost estimating software are extremely beneficial for companies to recognise the profitability of a project and plan their direction accordingly.

There are cases where, in certain regions of the world, there is an absence of cost data for road construction, there are cost formulas that have been developed for four different road standards and slopes, comprising of felling, forming, clearing, grading and miscellaneous work. These work elements represent a major share of the work involved in road construction and enables predictive road costing and gives a value in US$.

Such methods, when combined with the technology of predictive software, help in generating a sound system for determining the profitability for road construction projects and thus, increase profitability by maximising the effort that goes into a project, efficiently.
